Neon-colored, sci-fi mod for GZDoom
The Space Pirate Mod is a free-to-play mod for the public source port GZDoom. In this sci-fi action experience, you get to play as the titular space pirate. Compared to the base game that inspired this modding phenomenon, this mod sets itself apart from the Doom franchise. Expect an entirely new arsenal, stages, and a fast-paced combat experience.

An anime-inspired adventure
The first thing players might notice with The Space Pirate Mod is its use of anime-style artworks. This can be seen from the interface to certain cutscenes. Watching the entire screen demonstrates the capability of GZDoom far beyond the dated Doom aesthetic. However, the enemies still largely resemble those from the original game, with grunts looking like the Doom Guy himself.
In terms of gameplay, it does speed up the entire experience, doing away with the slow-approaching feel of the old video games. Enemies move faster this time and there are additional animations between actions that make them look smoother and more fluid. Also, this works because the game offers a new weapon system. It lets you choose from different load-outs, each with its specific strengths and weaknesses.
In this version of the game, there’s only one character to play, which is not surprising at all for GZDoom mods. There are also a number of additional movement mechanics such as wall jumps and slide dashes. Still, the game could use more levels because its limited stages make the gameplay short and rather unsatisfactory. There are not a lot of locations to enjoy combat and motions.
A fun and short experience
Overall, The Space Pirate Mod can be considered one of the better mods for the GZDoom platform. It introduces a fast-paced action experience with a light premise. As the titular space pirate, you are granted all-new weapons as well as new movement mechanics, opening up new possibilities as you play, despite the enemies looking like they were lifted directly from Doom. Recommended.
